So you want to generate traffic online? Well, you have come to the right place because before you can generate traffic online you first need to understand the rules.
I recently got a new board game that I never heard of before, do you think I just cracked it opened and started playing?
Heck no!
Before I even took out the board and all the game pieces, I first read the rules to find out the object of the game, how it gets set up and most importantly, how to play the game.
This is similar when you want to generate traffic online. You can’t just “jump in” and start advertising campaign without first knowing the rules…
…all it will lead to is confusion, a waste of time, a waste of money and you’ll never want to “play the game” again.
5 Rules to Generate Traffic Online
Below you will find the rules to generate traffic online that you’re business should live by.
RULE #1 – NEVER WASTE TRAFFIC
From the get-go, you want to set things up so you never waste any traffic that is sent to your website – especially paid traffic campaigns!
You need to get the most bang for your buck and there’s three ways to capitalize on every visitor that sees your website.
- Capture Leads
- Monetize Leads
- Retarget the “Lookie Loues”
In order to capture leads, you need a couple of tools: (1) A custom capture page (i.e. website), and (2) email collection software.
A capture page is often referred to as an opt-in page, squeeze page or landing page. It has one purpose and one purpose only: to get visitors to “opt-in” to your website by entering their name and/or email address to get more information about what you are promoting on the page.
Here is an example of a custom capture page that is promoting a marketing lead system. It’s purpose is to get someone to enter their email address.
As you can see from the picture above, the capture page is a very simple website with a targeted message to a specific group of people. If someone wants the information that is being advertised, all they need to do is enter their email address and click the button.
There are a lot of tools out there that allows you to build capture pages to begin this process. I personally use and only recommend the most popular funnel builder among marketers today.
After someone visits your capture page and opts in, you collect their name and or email address using some kind of email collection software. This practice is effectively “building your list.”
This software also allows you to send automatic email follow up messages to monetize the leads by continuing to promote what they originally opted in for and relevant products and services that will make you money.
Like with building capture pages, there are a lot of different email collection software services out there. This one right here is by far the best value and and simple to use…
…I should know. I use it myself in my own business.
The third way to never waste traffic is to implement a marketing strategy called retargeting.
This is crucial because the traffic that you send to your capture page doesn’t always opt-in. For example, let’s say I send 100 visitors to a page that I’m promoting and only 25 of those people opt-in by entering in their email address…
…what about the other 75 people who didn’t opt-in? How does that traffic not go to waste?
Through retargeting. Here’s how it works:
Most likely you have been retargeted at some time when browsing around on the Internet. Let’s say you just got done looking at a pair of shoes online and you decide not to buy them for whatever reason. Then you go to different websites and you suddenly start seeing that same pair of shoes being advertised every where you go!
Boom! You are seeing a retargeting ad. It’s a VERY powerful type of advertising. AdRoll.com is a company that specializes in this type of advertising and can be used on any budget.
RULE #2 – DON’T GO FOR CHEAP, GO FOR RESULTS
I’ve coached hundreds of people over the last few years helping them build their online business and most always ask, “What’s the cheapest way I can get traffic to my website?” Or how to increase website traffic free.
Cheap is not always good. You most likely get what you pay for!
Be willing to pay a little bit more to acquire a higher calibre of visitor. A higher quality of visitor that will help you get a better result. Think about it, are you really out to get traffic or to get a result that visitor can achieve by coming to your website.
Getting traffic to your website is just a means to an end.
Aim for getting a result, not a visitor. If you want to learn how to get traffic to your website fast is easy, but if you send 50,000 instant website traffic to your website for super cheap and they don’t buy? Not really a good strategy.
Instead of asking what’s the cheapest traffic I can get? Ask, “How do I get the most results from the traffic I am getting?”
RULE #3 – IT’S NOT THE PRODUCT, IT’S THE OFFER
They keyword here is the “OFFER.” If you go to Home Depot to buy a drill, it’s not really the drill that you want. You really want a hole in the wall. It’s what the product produces, which is result.
Ask yourself this question: “What result will this product produce for my customers?” Focus on the offer and result rather than the product itself and what it can deliver.
One way you can do this on your capture pages is provides benefits instead of features of the product. Have you ever heard the phrase, “Features tell, benefits sell?” It’s true! Here’s a prime example of the difference between features and benefits:
Yah, having a lot of storage is a nice feature on a music player, but the benefit is being able to have 1,000’s of songs in my pocket!
Focus on the offer, the end result instead of the product itself.
RULE #4 – PLAY STRATEGICALLY LONG TERM
Most Internet marketers focus on the short game by sending as many people as they can to an offer page just to make a quick buck. If they are lucky, they may experience a 1-2% conversion rate. That might make them smile and be happy for a while, but it doesn’t last because you have to keep sending as much traffic to the sales pages to get the one time sale.
Your online business is NOT the product your selling or even the company that you are promoting, it’s you.
Your business if a reflection of who? You.
Instead of focusing on the product, which is the short-term quick result what again is the end result? So my long-term strategy for traffic generation is to focus on building my personal email list of subscribers and getting them to connect with me and become the face of whatever I’m doing.
Take the company Apple as an example, there’s no doubt that the products a great, but it was Steve Jobs who was the face of the company and took his company where it is today.
As the face of your own business, you want people to connect with you on a personal level and you can do this in a couple of different ways:
- Build rapport via email providing value to your subscribers
- Refer subscribers to your “home” on the Internet
You are currently at my “home” on the Internet. HowToWithEvan.com is my hub on the Internet. You may have found this article by doing a Google search OR you were referred here by an email I sent you because you’re on my list. This is my way of connecting with you personally AND providing you helpful, useful information (i.e. value) that you want and need.
Begin to plant the seeds of You, Inc. and start connecting yourself with the ads that you are promoting focusing on the result. Building you is your long-term game. Companies and products your affiliated with now come and go…
…strategically set up your business to have your audience follow you instead of the product or company.
RULE #5 – HAVE FUN, IT’S A GAME!
When I played that board game for the first time I was talking about up above, I didn’t win. Guess what? Sometimes when doing advertising campaigns you won’t always gets the results that you want.
You don’t win every single game.
But, how you win is by focusing on making yourself better every day, every week, every month and every year. You will have a lot of ups and downs in your journey – have fun with it, stay the course and treat it as a game!
To get better at a game takes practice. The more you practice and learn from your mistakes and “past games” makes you better. Focus and stay the course and endeavor to do better than you did before.
When you generate traffic online, one game that I love to play is split-testing my capture pages to try and get higher and higher conversion and opt-in rate. Here’s a picture of how this type of game works:
In this example, variation B got the better conversion so I’d keep that one and replace the other and try and beat out the winner.
